A coherent optical architecture combined with optical-layer protection provides the most effective way to solve these challenges. By transporting traffic directly at high-bandwidth wavelengths on the DWDM layer, large amounts of data can be carried on far fewer fibers and ports, significantly improving spectral efficiency and simplifying the network. At the same time, optical-channel-level protection enables fast fault recovery without relying on complex electrical-layer switching, ensuring carrier-grade reliability for mission-critical services.

The solution is built on a 400G coherent DWDM ring with OCH (optical channel) level protection. Each data center connects to the ring through high-speed 400G Ethernet client interfaces that are mapped directly to tunable 400G coherent optical channels on the line side. These wavelengths are transported over the metro optical ring, forming a fully protected optical backbone between all sites.
When a fiber cut or node failure occurs, the OCH protection mechanism performs automatic switching within 50 milliseconds, rerouting traffic along the alternate direction of the ring. Because this protection operates at the optical layer, services remain uninterrupted and do not require complex electrical-layer reconfiguration.
